A strong relationship between a parent and a child is worth fighting for. For both of you, it is one of the most important relationships in your lives. When it is good, not only is it enjoyable, but it does a lot of parenting heavy lifting.
A strong relationship empowers parents to lead. Parenting is in essence leadership. If you have ever been required to follow the lead of someone you did not enjoy a great relationship with, you know that your instinct is to resist at all costs. Conversely, if you have ever tried to lead someone who is not attending to you, you know there is no frustration greater.
A strong relationship takes care of difficult behaviour. From anxiety and aggression to picky eating - there is no challenging behaviour that does not get better when parents make the child feel that the relationship remains intact and help them complete the journey to emotional resolution.
A strong relationship frees the child to grow and spread their wings. A relationship that a child does not have to worry about, the one where they are seen and supported, is a true gift. It gives the child the power to learn, grow and become the best version of themselves.
A strong relationship shields the child from wounding experiences outside the family. Bullying at school, a sarcastic teacher or a mean social media comment – none of them sting as much when home is haven.
A strong relationship grows kind, caring and resilient children. The science is clear: how we are nurtured by our caregivers is directly linked to how happy and resilient our brains become. A strong nurturing relationship raises happy kids who will in their turn find it easy to build strong relationships with others.
A strong relationship protects parents against burnout. Far too often modern parenting is a hard and lonely job. But when you can trust yourself and lead with love and ease, it is so rewarding. In fact, science says that you re-wire your own brain for better resilience and mental health as you nurture your child!
But often the relationship between parents and children becomes a power struggle.
Some alarming symptoms are anger, frustration, guilt, self-doubt and losing joy in parenting.
How do we help parents get their family dynamic on track?
There are two equally important elements.
You need to get the story of child development right. Nature has a blueprint for raising resilient, autonomous and caring children. But our culture got really good at raising them bossy, anxious and depressed. In our consultations, we will teach you to work alongside your child's unfolding emotional, cognitive and physical development. You will know what is crucial to put in place and what you don't need to lose any sleep over. You will find confidence in the knowledge that keeps on giving for years.
You need to get your story right. What beliefs are messing up your relationship with your child and holding you back as a parent? What triggers are behind your frustrations? How are you coping with stress? You're not meant to go it alone as a parent. Let us support you in making your story a happy one!
